Academic WorldQuest

What began as a way to teach students about our world and broaden their knowledge in a fun, team-building manner has evolved into a dynamic national academic competition – and we’re pleased to help Western Massachusetts’ students be part of the excitement!

Under guidelines set forth by the World Affairs Councils of America, the annual WorldQuest competition is designed to enhance high school curriculum of geography, history, and world affairs. Beginning with cities such as Springfield, student teams are quizzed in categories such as:

• Pandemics
• Genocide
International Migration Trends
• Current events
• Food Production and Consumption
• World Cup
• World Music
• The Islands of the Carribean

• The Sultanate of Oman

Academic WorldQuest 2010 took place on Saturday, January 23 at Western New England College with Brenda Garton moderating.  To celebrate the fifth annual Academic WorldQuest competition, the World Affairs Council of Western Massachusetts opened competition up beyond the public high schools of Springfield to include public and private schools in Springfield and the seven contiguous communities.  Holyoke Catholic High School and Wilbraham & Monson Academy joined returning teams Early College High School at Holyoke Community College (2008 WorldQuest champions), The High School of Science & Technology (2007) The International Baccalaureate Programme at Commerce (2006), Springfield Central High School and returning 2009 champions Springfield Renaissance School.

In the end Renaissance emerged the winner from a three way tie for first with Commerce and Central and will continue on to represent the Council and our region at the national competition hosted by the World Affairs Councils of America on Saturday, April 24 in Washington, DC at the National Press Club.
